On a typical day, you'd find Mwangi Kamau, a Nairobi-based cosmetologist, helping clients achieve their skincare goals. But what's remarkable about his journey is that he didn't always have a passion for beauty.
After completing his computer science degree, Kamau felt unfulfilled. He joined a cosmetology college in 2006, where he earned a diploma and began working as a beauty consultant. However, it wasn't until he pursued a two-year course in skincare in Italy in 2015 that he discovered his true calling.
"After doing computer science, I realised that I still wanted to be a health practitioner," Kamau says.
With his newfound skills and knowledge, Kamau returned to Kenya in 2017 and started his own business, Blush On Skincare Limited. He faced numerous challenges, including limited capital and the need for effective online marketing. Nevertheless, he persevered and today, his business is thriving.
As a skincare expert, Kamau offers consultation, training, and products. He also works with pharmacies and beauty clinics, providing training in makeup and basic skin knowledge. His cosmetics line is a popular recommendation among his clients.
"Cosmetology is a well-paying career, but it depends on how one ventures into it," Kamau notes. He earns between Sh80,000 and Sh120,000 monthly and has two permanent employees and four on temporary terms.
For Kamau, the key to success lies in integrity and honesty. He advises aspiring entrepreneurs to always maintain these values, which will ultimately lead to success.
