As Kenya grapples with over 8,000 Covid-19 cases and 160 deaths, socialite pastor Robert Burale has come under fire for claiming to be infected with the virus.
On July 7, 2020, Burale took to Instagram to share a video of himself in a Nairobi hospital, claiming to be on oxygen due to Covid-19. However, many Kenyans are skeptical of his diagnosis, with some accusing him of faking it to attract more followers and increase his offerings and tithe.
"Burale is the first among many other preachers who will try to attract followers and congregants with stories of having recovered from a deadly disease," tweeted @TrottoirRadio. "It is symbolic of 'healing and anointing' and such personalities love it. I wish they did the same with all other diseases."
Others have also expressed their doubts about Burale's diagnosis, with some calling him a liar and accusing him of trying to take advantage of the situation.
The Ministry of Health has advised Kenyans to take precautions to prevent the spread of Covid-19, including wearing face masks, washing hands with soap and running water, practicing social distance, and eating healthy.
Despite the skepticism surrounding his diagnosis, Burale's video has gone viral, with many Kenyans sharing their opinions and reactions on social media.
