Published on July 7, 2020, the Galana Kulalu project has made significant progress since its inception. The National Irrigation Authority has taken over the management of the Galana Kulalu 10,000 acre model farm, which is 85% complete, after the premature exit of the Israel Contractor Green Arava.

The Authority is currently utilizing the installed irrigation infrastructure, comprising of 20 centre pivots covering an area of 3,300 acres, and 1,800 acres under drip irrigation system for production of Maize and other high-value crops.

Rehabilitation work was also carried out on the intake after it was destroyed by floods in May 2018, and four pumps were installed at the intake.

Progress has been made in the area targeted for progressive cropping between March and September 2020, with 2,650 acres already cropped and a demonstration farm of 10 acres planted.

Of the 10 acres, 5 acres have been cropped, with crops including bananas, mangoes, cashew nuts, citrus, palm, and pineapples.
