Kenya's education system has been severely impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic, with schools remaining closed until January 2021.

As part of the government's efforts to contain the spread of the virus, all schools in Kenya will remain shut until next year, with final year exams cancelled.

Education Minister George Magoha announced the decision, stating that students would repeat a year as schools had closed in mid-March, three months after the school calendar had begun.

However, colleges and universities are set to reopen in September, provided they adhere to strict guidelines.

The East African country has confirmed over 8,000 cases of coronavirus, with at least 164 deaths, and has seen a recent surge in new infections.

President Uhuru Kenyatta recently announced a phased reopening of the country, including the lifting of travel restrictions in Nairobi and Mombasa, but extended a nationwide overnight curfew for a further 30 days.

Kenya's academic year typically runs from January to November, but the 2020 school calendar year will be considered lost due to COVID-19 restrictions, according to Mr Magoha.

The government has been providing school programmes via radio, television, and online since students stopped attending classes in March, but many pupils lack access to technology, making online learning inaccessible to them.

Mr Magoha has pledged to explore ways to make online learning accessible to all pupils, ensuring that no student is left behind in their education.
