On July 7, 2020, a daring but ultimately unsuccessful bank robbery attempt in Busia town left five suspects in police custody, including a police officer.

Three of the suspects were apprehended inside the Kenya Commercial Bank (KCB) Busia town Branch while attempting to withdraw Sh28.5 million from a client's account.

The bank officials became suspicious after the suspects presented a fake Identity Card that did not match the owner's account.

Busia County Police Commander John Nyoike revealed that the bank manager alerted the police, who immediately visited the area and arrested the suspects.

The five suspects are Bhavin Ramesh, Vijay Jamnaday, Desmond Lusweti, Alex Kimeli, and Police constable Kipkirui Tanui, who is attached to the Wilson Airport Police Station in Nairobi.

According to the police, Ramesh, Jamnaday, and Lusweti entered the banking hall to execute the fraudulent transaction, while Kipkirui and Kimeli waited in a standby car outside the bank premises.

After learning their accomplices had been arrested, Kipkirui and Kimeli drove off, leading to a chase that ended in Ahero.

The suspects are being held in lawful custody pending arraignment in court.
