On July 7, 2020, the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) received state-of-the-art forensic laboratory equipment from the United States government to aid in investigations into extrajudicial killings.
The equipment, donated by the US government, will enable detectives to uncover crucial evidence and fast-track investigations into pending cases of extrajudicial killings in the country.
IPOA Vice-chairperson Jonathan Lodompui stated that the new equipment will significantly aid in the investigation process.
According to IPOA, over the last 15 months, they have documented 210 cases of extrajudicial killings, with 110 cases investigated conclusively. Six convictions have been recorded, with three suspects sentenced to death.
As part of efforts to address growing concerns over extrajudicial killings and police brutality, IPOA has launched a call centre where members of the public can lodge complaints against the police by calling the toll-free number 1559.
