On Tuesday, more than 50 people were taken into custody in Nairobi following the Saba Saba demonstrations.

As protesters clashed with police in various parts of the city, some demonstrators condemned the police's handling of civilians.

Nairobi Police Commander Philip Ndolo stated that the activists failed to inform the relevant authorities about their plans to take to the streets.

According to Mr. Ndolo, those arrested will be released on cash bail, with the requirement to report to police stations on Wednesday and appear in court to face charges of illegal gathering.

Those without the means to pay for bail will be released on free bond, with a court appearance also scheduled.

The decision to release the suspects was made in light of the government's COVID-19 containment measures.
