On July 7, 2020, renowned activist Boniface Mwangi was detained by police while protesting the Saba Saba march in Nairobi. The event had turned chaotic, with police using tear gas to disperse the crowd.
According to reports, Mwangi had gone to the Central Police Station to help free those arrested during the protests. His actions led to his own arrest, sparking outrage among his supporters.
Speaking to Kenyans.co.ke, Mwangi confirmed that he had been taken into custody while advocating for the release of the detained protestors.
His last tweet before the arrest read: "Police everywhere, hiding with Sankara Kinuthia somewhere in the CBD. Police have decided to violate the constitution and target active citizens for Saba Saba march."
