Barcelona president Josep Maria Bartomeu has sought to quell speculation surrounding Lionel Messi's future at the club, stating that they have an obligation to re-sign the Argentine star.
Speaking to Catalan radio station Rac1 on Tuesday, Bartomeu described Messi as 'the best player in history' and expressed confidence that he will remain at the Camp Nou beyond his current contract, which expires in 2021.
‘Normally we do not explain the discussions with players but it is evident that we have the obligation to re-sign him’, Bartomeu said.
Bartomeu also expressed his support for coach Quique Setien, who has come under pressure following a run of unconvincing form since La Liga's restart.
‘Setien will continue, of course’, Bartomeu said. ‘I am quite happy with the development we are showing in the games despite the draws’.
Barcelona are currently second in La Liga, four points behind leaders Real Madrid, and will face Napoli in the Champions League second leg in August.
The club are trying to have the second leg played at the Camp Nou instead of a neutral venue, with Bartomeu stating that they are ‘fighting for the second leg of the round of 16 to be played at the Camp Nou’.
