As Kenya prepares to reopen its economy in phases, local manufacturers have shown remarkable resilience in the face of the COVID-19 pandemic. On July 7, 2020, Cabinet Secretary for Industrialization, Trade and Enterprise Development, Betty Maina, toured factories to assess their preparedness.

CS Maina commended local manufacturers for their innovative approaches, which have enabled them to maintain operations despite the challenges posed by the pandemic. She emphasized the importance of adhering to set standards and regulations, which have facilitated business continuity.

"The investments made by Kenyan manufacturers are impressive," CS Maina noted. "They have adhered to the set-out standards and regulations, which have enabled business continuity. This has enabled them to stand by the country as we face the crisis together."

CS Maina also highlighted the manufacturing sector's role in cushioning the country from the impact of COVID-19. She noted that local industry has demonstrated its capability to produce goods previously thought to be imported, which will lead to job and wealth creation by bridging the trade deficit.

Kenya Association of Manufacturers (KAM) Chair, Sachen Gudka, echoed CS Maina's sentiments, emphasizing the importance of consuming local products. He noted that local manufacturers have the capacity to produce goods needed for consumption by all markets and urged Kenyans to support local industry.
