On July 7, 2020, the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) CEO and Secretary Dr. Nancy Macharia announced that the commission would adhere to the Ministry of Education's directives on school reopening.
Dr. Macharia made the statement during a meeting at the Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development (KICD), where she emphasized the importance of ensuring the safety of both learners and teachers.
She noted that the current understaffing in schools, exacerbated by the requirement for people over 58 years and those with underlying health issues to work from home, poses a significant challenge to the profession.
Dr. Macharia stated that the TSC would rely on the guidance of the Ministry of Health to ensure the safety of teachers and learners.
Earlier, on July 6, 2020, Education Cabinet Secretary Professor George Magoha announced that all basic learning institutions in the country would reopen in January 2021, with no national examinations scheduled for the year due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Professor Magoha also stated that this year's candidates would sit for their Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) and Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) exams later in 2021, with the decision to reopen schools in January remaining tentative and subject to change depending on the pandemic situation.
