July 7, 2020 - Nairobi, Kenya. President Uhuru Kenyatta has directed Cabinet Secretaries and Principal Secretaries to prioritize the completion of existing development projects in the 2020/21 financial year.
According to State House Spokeswoman Kanze Dena, the President emphasized that no new projects will be initiated in this financial year, except with his express authority.
During a virtual meeting with the officials, the President reiterated the importance of implementing and completing ongoing priority projects and programmes as outlined in his Administration's Transformative Agenda for the Nation.
He emphasized that these programmes must be strictly implemented within set timelines and budgets, and that completion rates will be adopted as a key performance indicator for all Cabinet Secretaries, Chief Administrative Secretaries, and Principal Secretaries.
The President also called for collective responsibility in the implementation of government projects and programmes, urging the involvement of entire ministerial establishments to ensure timely delivery of quality outcomes.
He further acknowledged the current economic challenges caused by the COVID-19 pandemic and reminded government departments to settle pending bills as a priority, with pending bills being the first charge on each ministry's budget.
Additionally, the President directed all ministries, state departments, and state agencies to give preferential procurement to Kenyan-made goods and services in support of local industries.
