Published on July 7, 2020, Kirinyaga Woman Representative Purity Ngirici has lost her position as the chair of The Kenya Women Parliamentary Association (KEWOPA) after a vote by 65 out of 97 MPs.
KEWOPA is a membership association for all women parliamentarians drawn from across all political parties in the Senate and National Assembly.
Ngirici, who has been a fierce critic of Kirinyaga Governor Anne Waiguru, was ousted in favor of Kiambu Woman Rep Gathoni wa Muchomba, who will be deputised by Kisumu Woman Representative Roza Buyu and Nominated Senator Millicent Omanga.
Ngirici's husband, Andrew Ngirici, was summoned by police in Mwea East Sub-County on June 13, 2020, and grilled for two hours after he threatened to organise protests if the Senate chose to put the fate of Kirinyaga Governor Anne Waiguru in the hands of an 11-member committee.
KEWOPA has been spearheading the push for the realisation of the two-thirds gender principle as proposed by the Constitutional Amendment Bill 2015 (No. 4).
