On July 7, 2020, a devastating road accident occurred near Maanzoni Lodge in Athi River sub-county, Machakos County, along the busy Nairobi-Mombasa highway.
According to Machakos County Government emergency services director David Mwongela, two trucks collided at an intersection, causing one of them to knock off another vehicle onto a Probox car heading to Nairobi from Mombasa.
Three people lost their lives in the accident: two truck drivers and a turn boy. Emergency services officers struggled to save the driver of the Probox car, who was trapped in the wreckage.
