On July 7, 2020, Education Cabinet Secretary George Magoha announced that national examinations would not take place that year due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
As a result, Standard Eight and Form Four students who were scheduled to sit the exams in 2020 would instead do so in 2021.
The minister also stated that all basic learning institutions would reopen in January 2021, when the virus curve was expected to have flattened.
Technical and vocational education and training (Tvet) institutions and colleges would reopen in September 2020, but only with strict adherence to the Ministry of Health's guidelines for containing the virus.
