On July 7, 2020, Education CS George Magoha announced a major shift in the country's education calendar due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Initially, schools were set to reopen on September 1, 2020, but the rising number of Coronavirus cases led to a change of heart.

Magoha stated, 'Based on the rising trend, we agreed to shelve classes. The country will be severely affected as all other children will lose the year. It shall be impossible to achieve social distancing.'

He emphasized the importance of social distancing, handwashing, and wearing masks in ensuring the safety of learners.

As a result, the KCPE and KCSE exams slated for 2020 have been cancelled, and students will sit for the exams in 2021 instead.

The school calendar for 2020 will be considered lost due to the pandemic, affecting all children, including those being offered international curriculum.

Magoha added that the Ministry of Education will explore online learning options to mitigate the impact of the pandemic on education.

TVETS and colleges will reopen in September, but with strict adherence to COVID-19 regulations.

The Ministry of Education will release a calendar for 2021 at a later date.
