On Monday, July 6, 2020, President Uhuru Kenyatta launched the 'Kazi Mtaani' initiative to support Kenyan youth affected by the Covid-19 health crisis. The initiative aims to provide opportunities to vulnerable youth in Tharaka Nithi County.
According to Ms. Beverly Opwora, the Tharaka Nithi County Commissioner, the program targets youth between the ages of 18-35 who are in real need, especially those whose heads of households are not employed. The recruitment process will be free from political interference and will be conducted through digital technology.
Ms. Opwora emphasized that the recruitment will be based on location, and only youth from their respective locations will be considered. Area chiefs, youth representatives, women representatives, and 'Nyumba Kumi' members will work together to identify deserving needy families.
The initiative will provide opportunities for the youth to open businesses, form groups for agribusiness, and register themselves to benefit from other government funds. There is no education qualification required, making it accessible to youth who were previously left out due to their education level.
Additionally, those who have already graduated from the National Youth Service Cohorts program will be considered for supervisory opportunities, as they already possess the necessary skills.
Ms. Opwora addressed the press at Chuka University, where she held a meeting with National Government Administration Officers from the entire county. The 'Kazi Mtaani' initiative is expected to benefit at least 2300 residents in Tharaka Nithi County.
