On July 7, 2020, Kirinyaga County Woman Rep Purity Ngirici was removed as the chairperson of the Kenya Women Parliamentary Association (KEWOPA) by acclamation.

KEWOPA members cited Ngirici's alleged failure to champion gender issues, particularly the rising teenage pregnancies in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, as a reason for her removal.

They also accused Ngirici of being involved in tearing down female leaders, pointing to her alleged role in the woes facing Kirinyaga Governor Anne Waiguru.

Waiguru had faced an onslaught from Kirinyaga elected leaders, leading to her impeachment by the ward representatives and a falling out with her deputy, Peter Ndambiri.

However, the governor received a reprieve after the Senate cleared her of any wrongdoing.

KEWOPA members proposed Kiambu counterpart Muthoni Wamuchomba as Ngirici's replacement.
