On July 5, 2020, a heated exchange between Bungoma Governor Wycliffe Wangamati's administration and the county assembly took a violent turn at Tongaren Market.

Bungoma MCA Fred Musebe and his colleague Elizabeth Tindi stormed a meeting convened by Wangamati to launch the office of the ward's administrator, despite not being invited.

The situation escalated when Tindi tore into Wangamati's development record, accusing him of sidelining the ward. Musebe backed her up, stating, 'We Tongaren people are usually very keen before voting as we are straight forward people and if we will not have seen any development from you by 2022 we shall send you home parking.'

As Musebe took the podium, the governor's security detail, attached to the security detail of his deputy Ngome Kibanani, descended on the two leaders and snatched Musebe's microphone.

The chaos that ensued left Musebe and attendees nursing injuries.

According to a report by People Daily on July 7, 2020, the incident is the latest in a series of clashes between the county assembly and the executive in Bungoma County.

These clashes have been centered around development records, with the county assembly accusing the executive of embezzling public funds.

On June 29, 2020, Council of Governors chairman Wycliffe Oparanya convened a crisis meeting with county bosses, urging MCAs to spare them as impeachments would derail development agendas.
