On July 7, 2020, Kenyatta University made a significant breakthrough in the fight against COVID-19 by inventing an innovative nasal swab test instrument.
The new instrument, designed by the university's students, is more comfortable to use than the current method of collecting samples from the back of the nasal cavity.
On Monday, Vice Chancellor Professor Paul Wainaina took Chief Administrative Secretary Ms Mumina Bonaya to the Chandaria Business and Incubation Centre to showcase the instrument.
Professor Wainaina emphasized that the university is working closely with the Kenya Bureau of Standards, the Pharmacy and Poisons Board, and the Ministry of Health to ensure the swab test meets the required standards for validation before industrial production.
Ms Bonaya expressed her admiration for the skills demonstrated by the students in contributing to the generation of solutions to the nation's problems.
The Chief Administrative Secretary also inspected the university's ongoing innovation of a ventilator, which is in the advanced stages of validation by the Kenya Bureau of Standards and the Ministries of Health and Industrialization.
