Police Raid Mathare Justice Center, Arrest Activists on Saba Saba Day

On July 7, 2020, police in Kenya raided the Mathare Justice Center, dispersing activists and residents who had gathered to commemorate Saba Saba Day. The activists had planned to express their displeasure over the continuous police brutality in the area.

Mathare, Kariobangi, and Dandora areas, where civil society groups had designated as starting points, were sealed off in the morning. A number of arrests have been reported, including activists who had organized the peaceful march.

Convener of the Social Justice Movement, Happy Olal, and 7 other members of Dandora Social Justice Centre have also been arrested and taken to Kariobangi Police Station.

As reported by KenyanReport, the police action has sparked widespread condemnation from human rights groups and activists.
