On July 6, 2020, President Uhuru Kenyatta lifted a partial lockdown in Nairobi and Mombasa, paving the way for the resumption of standard gauge railway passenger train services.

Kenya Railways Corporation has announced that it will release a new schedule for the train that shuttles between the two counties.

According to a notice from the firm, the Ministry of Transport and Kenya Railways, in conjunction with the SGR operator Africa Star Railways Operation Ltd (Afristar), will release a new operational schedule in due course.

Public transport has been severely affected by the stringent social distancing rules, with President Kenyatta warning public transport vehicles against flouting the rules.

Operators will require mandatory certification from the Ministry of Health, in consultation with the Ministry of Transport, to ensure compliance with all protocols developed by the Ministry of Health.
