As the city slowly recovers from the pandemic, New Yorkers are finally getting a taste of summer fun. On Monday, July 6, 2020, the city reopened its outdoor basketball, tennis, volleyball, and handball courts, providing residents with new recreation opportunities.

Public beaches are also now open for swimming, and dog runs have reopened, giving furry friends a chance to get some exercise. The reopening is part of Phase 3 of the city's reopening plan, which aims to gradually restore normalcy to daily life.

For some, the reopening is a welcome relief. Daniela Castillo, 30, and her mother, Gloria, were among those who took advantage of the reopening to get matching tattoos at Electric Anvil Tattoo in Crown Heights. However, their experience was not without its challenges, as they had to adapt to new safety protocols.

"I wish I could've been there with her," Daniela said, reflecting on the experience.

As the city continues to reopen, residents are cautiously optimistic about the future. Jonathan Lam, who brought his German shepherd to the dog run at Hunter's Point South Park in Queens, expressed some concerns about the city reopening too quickly. However, he was still glad to give his dog, Lexi, another place to keep active.

"It will be more of summer again," said Mayor Bill de Blasio, highlighting the city's efforts to restore normalcy to daily life.
