President Uhuru Kenyatta's Phased Reopening of the Economy ¶
On Monday, July 6, 2020, President Uhuru Kenyatta made his ninth state address on the coronavirus pandemic, outlining a phased reopening of the economy.
Published on July 6, 2020, at 7:35 PM EAT, the address reviewed existing containment measures, including the cessation of movement in Nairobi, Mombasa, and Mandera, the nationwide curfew, and social gatherings.
Here are the 10 key points from the address:
- The cessation of movement into and out of the Nairobi Metropolitan Area, Mombasa, and Mandera counties will lapse at 4:00 AM on Tuesday, July 7.
- The nationwide dusk-to-dawn curfew, currently in force between 9:00 PM and 4:00 AM daily, has been extended for a further 30 days.
- Places of worship will commence phased re-opening for congregational worship, with only 100 worshippers allowed in every service, which should not exceed one hour.
- The Ministry of Education will jointly notify the public on the resumption of the 2020 academic calendar for basic education and tertiary institutions.
- There will be no movement of public transport vehicles into and out of the areas previously under the cessation of movement restrictions, without the public transport providers being compliant with all protocols developed by the Ministry of Health.
- Local Air Travel within the territory of the Republic of Kenya will resume effective Wednesday, July 15, while International Air Travel into and out of the country will resume on August 1, 2020.
- The prohibition against social and political gatherings has been extended for a further period of 30 days, while the closure of bars has also been extended for the same period.
- The Ministry of Health, in conjunction with the Ministry of Industrialization, Trade, and Enterprise Development, has been ordered to establish protocols for the resumption of the importation and sale of imported/second-hand clothes.
- President Uhuru Kenyatta called on Kenyans to exercise civic responsibility in order to ease the process of phased reopening of the economy.
- The National Crime Research Centre has been ordered to probe the escalating cases of gender-based violence, the worrying trend of cases where the girl child has been disempowered, and the violation of children's rights.
