On July 5, 2020, Kasipul MP Ong'ondo Were launched a distribution of free avocado and mango seedlings to farmers in the constituency, aiming to boost food security and environment conservation efforts.

At least 600 farmers received the seedlings, with each farmer getting five seedlings for both fruits. The MP distributed 3000 seedlings in total, comprising 2000 avocado and 1000 mangoes.

According to the MP, the programme will also help farmers to earn a return of Sh30,000 every year after harvests, enabling them to pay school fees for their children.

Were, a member of the Environment Committee in the National Assembly, said the programme will augment the government's policy of 10 per cent vegetation cover required of geographical areas.

"Tree planting is key in environment conservation. This programme aims at killing two birds with one stone, production of fruits and vegetation cover," Were said.

He added that the programme will continue in subsequent years to ensure farmers have enough fruits and trees for environment conservation.

Were also distributed sanitisers to matatu and bodaboda operators during the function.
