On July 6, 2020, President Uhuru Kenyatta announced a phased reopening of places of worship in the country, following protocols developed by the Inter Faith Council.
According to the new guidelines, a maximum of 100 participants will be allowed in places of worship, with services not exceeding one hour. However, Sunday Schools and madrassas will remain suspended.
Uhuru also announced that congregants should be above 13-years old and below 58-years-old, effectively restricting young people from attending church services.
Reverend Victor Githu has expressed opposition to the government's new directive, claiming that it will seriously affect his church services. He argued that the directive is an attempt to block young righteous Kenyans from seeking God's Kingdom.
“Why can’t everyone just be allowed to pray? Like for me a lot of people depend on me, I must preach and do a lot of service work,” Githu said.
He added, “I’m so displeased with such directives, we will continue praying so that Uhuru can realize we deserve better directives. Everyone should be allowed to attend churches.”
