Published on July 6, 2020, Bali, Indonesia, is set to reopen its crippled vacation sector to foreign tourists in September, even as coronavirus cases continue to mount.

The island's governor, Wayan Koster, announced plans to re-open beaches, temples, and other tourism spots for domestic visitors by the end of July, paving the way for foreign holidaymakers to return from September 11.

However, it remains unclear if all countries will be allowed to visit or if restrictions will be put in place on their arrival.

"We must continue to make the best efforts to handle Covid-19, while at the same time we must begin to carry out activities for the sake of community life," said Governor Koster.

The island's tourism sector has been severely impacted by the pandemic, with flight volumes plummeting and hotels and restaurants struggling to survive.

As of Monday, Bali reported 1,900 confirmed infections, with 23 deaths, while Indonesia has posted 65,000 cases and 3,241 deaths.
