On July 6, 2020, India surpassed Russia in new coronavirus infections, a worrying trend as the world continues to battle the pandemic.

According to statistics from Johns Hopkins University, India has reported a total of 697,413 coronavirus cases, with 19,693 fatalities, placing it in the eighth position in terms of coronavirus fatalities.

India had reopened shopping centers, places of worship, and offices a month ago, but the country is now worried as it has reported more than 20,000 cases per day in the last three days.

The country has scaled up testing facilities in various states and cities in a bid to halt the spread of the disease.

India's new infections have been triggered by the seeming normalcy that has returned to the country, particularly in the Southern region, where infections had been kept at bay.
