On July 6, 2020, President Uhuru Kenyatta commended the Nairobi Metropolitan Service (NMS) for its efforts in improving service delivery in Nairobi and its catchment.
The President expressed satisfaction with the progress made by NMS in implementing the directives he gave to the new agency, aimed at enhancing service provision in the areas of waste collection and disposal, water and sanitation, housing and urban development, transport and public works.
Major General Mohammed Badi, Director General of NMS, assured the Head of State of his agency’s determination to transform Nairobi into a smart city by fully implementing its broad mandate.
Under the NMS initiative, the government’s “Kazi Mtaani” program has created new jobs by employing the youth and street families in its projects, with notable achievements in re-carpeting of CBD roads, where 30 percent of all the roads have been completed.
The NMS has also engaged the youth in drainage clearing, waste management, and rehabilitation of roads, and has drilled community water boreholes and water purification facilities at Kiboro Primary School (Mathare), Chief’s Camp (Mathare North), and at Kibra DCC’s office.
With the success recorded, the NMS will close down more than 80 illegal dumpsites in the city, and is now after garbage cartels in the city, with 110 such illegal dumping areas identified and 82 of solid waste cleared with enforcement for closure ongoing.
The NMS has also contracted the National Youth Service to help in garbage collection across the 85 wards in the county, and is working on urban renewal and affordable housing projects in Ngara and Pangani neighbourhoods.
