On July 6, 2020, President Kenyatta ordered the Ministry of Education to announce the resumption of the 2020 academic year for basic and tertiary education.

According to the President, the Ministry will notify Kenyans on the resumption of the 2020 schools calendar by July 7, 2020, at the latest.

President Kenyatta emphasized the importance of prioritizing the safety of learners and teachers in making recommendations for the resumption of schools.

He directed the Ministries of Interior and Education to work on guidelines and protocols for the gradual reopening of places of worship and schools.

Education Cabinet Secretary Prof George Magoha had previously set June 4, 2020, as the tentative opening date for schools, but later changed his stance due to the rising number of Covid-19 cases.

Magoha stated that the Ministry would advise on the level of preparedness required of all stakeholders involved in the running of schools and teacher training institutions.

President Kenyatta's directive comes after he hinted at possible gradual reopening of schools and places of worship in his speech on Madaraka Day.
