On July 6, 2020, President Uhuru Kenyatta announced the lifting of the ban on movement in and out of Nairobi, Mombasa, and Mandera, which had been imposed to contain the spread of the coronavirus.
Addressing the nation at Harambee House, President Kenyatta stated that the country had met a 'reasonable level of preparedness' to handle the COVID-19 pandemic, prompting his decision to partially reopen the country.
However, he extended the 9pm-4am countrywide curfew for the next 30 days.
Public transport providers operating in the three areas that were on lockdown will require approval from the Ministry of Health on compliance with safety protocols.
President Kenyatta warned that the order to reopen was made conditionally, noting that should the situation worsen over the next 21 days, the country will revert to lockdown.
