Published on July 6, 2020, Dan Sserenkuma, a former Gor Mahia striker, looks back on his time at the club with fond memories. Signed by the reigning Kenyan Premier League (KPL) champions in 2012, he quickly rose through the ranks to become a club legend.
During his tenure, Sserenkuma was named the KPL Player of the Year in 2012 and helped the club win the league in 2013 after an 18-year drought. He also topped the scorers' chart in 2014 as K'Ogalo retained the title.
In an interview with the club's media team, Sserenkuma shared his thoughts on his impressive performance in the Kenyan Premier League. 'There is no secret, except for hard work,' he said, crediting his teammates and coach for their relentless support.
When asked about his role in Gor's back-to-back KPL titles triumph, Sserenkuma recalled the feeling of scoring an injury-time goal against Sofapaka to end the club's 18-year title drought. 'It was unbelievable!' he exclaimed. '2012 was such a disappointing season for us, but I knew 2013 was going to be our year and indeed it came to pass.'
On the lessons he picked from Gor Mahia's humiliating defeat to Esperance in the Champions League, Sserenkuma noted that the experience helped the team to do well in the domestic league. He also compared his working relationship with former Gor Mahia coaches Bobby Williamson and Zravcko Logarusic, describing both as professional coaches with a focus on winning each match.
When asked about his working relationship with Williamson, who had previously overlooked him for the Uganda Cranes, Sserenkuma expressed excitement at reuniting with the coach at Gor Mahia. He also denied allegations of being called an impostor by an AFC Leopards official, describing the claim as a 'big lie.'
Looking back on his time at Gor Mahia, Sserenkuma reflected on his decision to leave the club after landing a trial invite in Europe. 'I realized the timing was wrong and I had some unfinished business at Gor, that's why I had to return to the country,' he explained.
