On July 6, 2020, President Uhuru Kenyatta addressed the nation on the new COVID-19 restrictions in Kenya. The address came as the country continued to grapple with the pandemic.

The President announced that the cessation of movement in and out of Nairobi, which was set to lapse on July 7, 2020, would not be renewed. However, a 9pm-4am curfew would be extended for another 30 days.

President Kenyatta also urged Kenyans to exercise cautious optimism and avoid reckless abandon. He emphasized that the country's progress would be determined by individual behavior, and that Kenyans should be their brothers' and sisters' keepers.

The President outlined several measures to prevent the spread of the virus, including:

  • Restrictions on non-essential upcountry travel
  • Requirements for mandatory certification from the Ministry of Health for PSVs moving in and out of areas previously under cessation
  • Resumption of local flights on July 15, 2020, in strict conformity with guidelines and protocols issued by the Ministry of Health
  • Resumption of international travel on August 1, 2020, in strict conformity with guidelines and protocols issued by the Ministry of Health
  • Extension of restrictions on political gatherings and other gatherings for another 30 days
  • Extension of restrictions on wedding and funeral attendance for another 30 days

President Kenyatta also emphasized the importance of social distancing, hand washing, and sanitizing, particularly when interacting with the elderly and those with depressed immune systems.

He also announced that only 100 people would be allowed in places of worship at any given time, and that worship services would not last for more than one hour.

Sunday school and Madrassa would remain closed.
