This archive report was first published on 6 July 2020.

On a fateful day in April 2020, a 14-year-old boy in Keyonzo village, Vihiga, met a tragic end while attempting to 'teach' his friends how to commit suicide.

According to reports, the boy had taken a rope and was about to demonstrate to his friends how successful suicide missions are done when the rope accidentally strangled him to death.

Assistant Chief Esther Vidijah confirmed the incident, stating that it has left the village and the family in pain, wondering what led the young boy to attempt such a thing.

Efforts by his friends to rescue him were futile as the rope quickly tightened around his neck.

As the village mourns the loss of the young boy, the Assistant Chief has cautioned parents and guardians to monitor their children, especially during this difficult time when schools remain closed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The body of the deceased was taken to Vihiga Referral Hospital mortuary as police launch investigations.
