On Sunday, a police officer shot and killed a trader at Rioma market in Marani, Kisii County, sparking violent demonstrations by locals.
According to area Chief Evans Onchiri, the victim was selling sanitisers in small bottles when he was confronted by police officers and shot in the chest.
The officer, who has been identified, has been interdicted and is in custody awaiting arraignment.
Kisii County Police Commander Jebel Munene announced the officer's interdiction in a meeting at Rioma market attended by hundreds of locals who had earlier protested over the killing.
There was a heavy security presence at the police station, with dozens of police officers guarding the station on Monday morning.
