Published on July 6, 2020, Nakuru Governor Lee Kinyanjui has urged the government to lower electricity tariffs charged to water services providers by Kenya Power.
The governor, who chairs the Urban, Planning and Housing Committee in the Council of Governors (CoG), made the call after touring the offices of the Naivasha Water Company.
According to Governor Kinyanjui, water companies across the country are facing a financial crisis due to high electricity charges exacerbated by the effects of the Covid-19 pandemic.
He called on Cabinet Secretary for Water Sicily Kariuki to engage her counterpart in Energy to review the tariffs.
During the tour, the governor welcomed the ongoing project to supply water to the Industrial Park in Mai Mahiu, but emphasized that residents of Naivasha should benefit from the project before water is supplied to the Industrial Park.
Residents of Naivasha have suffered from water with high levels of fluoride for years, and the governor noted that the Malewa dam would address this issue.
Members of the Lake Naivasha Riparian Association, who had previously opposed the construction of the Sh35 billion dam, have changed their stand, with the association chairman Mark Kariuki stating that the economic gains outweighed the losses.
