On July 6, 2020, Kenyan gospel singer Ruth Matete received the long-awaited news that she could finally bury her husband, Pastor John Apewajoye, after a three-month wait.
Apewajoye, 42, died on April 11th at Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH) due to multiple organ failure occasioned by burn injuries he sustained in a fire incident at their home in Great Wall estate in Athi River on March 30th.
According to reports, an autopsy showed that Apewajoye suffered 60 percent burns, and an investigation was launched into the circumstances surrounding his death.
Matete, who is pregnant with Apewajoye's child, was questioned by detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) in relation to his death.
Apewajoye's manager and friend, Jessy Mcjessiey, a Nigerian, released a video claiming foul play into his sudden death, alleging that Matete had previously stabbed her husband on different occasions and had threatened to kill him.
Matete's lawyer, Robert Odanga, had previously stated that holding the body did not make sense, as the initial postmortem had already compromised the body, and the toxicological test results were also out.
On Saturday, Radio Citizen presenter Jerida Andayi announced that Matete is now free to lay her husband to rest, and a fundraising campaign was launched to support her in giving Pastor Beloved John a good sendoff.
