Real Madrid captain Sergio Ramos has once again proven his penalty-taking prowess, scoring his 22nd consecutive penalty on Sunday as his team held on for a 1-0 win over Athletic Bilbao.
With the win, Madrid inched closer to winning La Liga, taking a seven-point lead over Barcelona, who play later on Sunday at in-form Villarreal.
Anything but a victory for Barca would likely leave them too much to do with four games remaining, especially as Madrid own the superior record head-to-head.
Madrid's toughest fixture left was against a robust, well-organised Bilbao side, but they emerged victorious, thanks in part to Ramos' nerve from the spot.
"It's a massive win," said Ramos. "We knew today was going to be one of the biggest games that we have left. It's always a difficult game away at Bilbao and we saw it like that. We're happy with another crucial three points that put more pressure on Barcelona."
Despite being without key players Raphael Varane and Eden Hazard, Madrid still managed to secure the win, with Eder Militao replacing Varane and Marco Asensio making his first start in 14 months up front.
Asensio's free-kick had created several chances for Madrid, but it was Ramos who ultimately sealed the win with his penalty in the 73rd minute.
"In those moments of doubt that's when I feel most comfortable," said Ramos. "I wanted to take the responsibility."
Bilbao's Iker Munain was left frustrated, claiming that Madrid had again been lucky with decisions.
"We're not going to win it thanks to the referees," said Munain. "People have to look at themselves and be critical of their own performances."
