On July 5, 2020, a tragic incident unfolded in Kisii County when a police officer attached to the Rioma Police Station shot and killed a local businessman.
The incident occurred after a disagreement over a hand sanitizer, which the police officer claimed the businessman was selling in contravention of COVID-19 guidelines.
According to reports, the police officer accused the businessman of disobeying the guidelines, leading to an argument that ultimately resulted in the businessman's death.
Angry residents took to the streets, protesting the killing and setting ablaze a section of the Rioma Police Station.
