Terryanne Chebet: 10 Things I Did After Being Fired

Published on July 5, 2020

Former Citizen TV news anchor Terryanne Chebet has shared her experience of job loss and offered advice to Kenyan journalists currently grappling with mass lay-offs.

On July 1, 2020, Chebet announced her exit from her position as General Manager of Metropol TV, and in a recent interview, she revealed that when she was fired as a news anchor at Royal Media Services (RMS)-owned Citizen TV in 2016, she felt worried, angry, and betrayed.

She disclosed that she was informed of her axing by her then-boss just hours before she was to go live on air for her show The Business Centre.

"It was a difficult time and I cried every night, wallowing in self-pity and anxiety," she wrote.

However, Chebet has since bounced back and is now offering advice to journalists who have lost their jobs.

Here are 10 things she did after being fired:

  • Take Control of Your Budget
  • Downsize
  • Restructure Your Debt
  • Health Insurance and Savings
  • Re-Write Your Strategic Plan
  • Update and Clean Up your CV
  • Network with Industry Peers
  • Build Your Personal Brand
  • Get Physically Active
  • Tell Your Story

Chebet advised journalists to use the lessons from her experience to get back on their feet.
