On July 5, 2020, a tense scene unfolded at a fuel toll station in Sabatia market, Butere Sub-county, Kakamega, when a crowd turned on four police officers who were arresting Lugari MP Ayub Savula.
The officers were forced to seek refuge in Savula's car after the crowd started pelting them with stones, putting their lives in danger.
According to eyewitnesses, the police officers had confronted Savula as he addressed a crowd at the fuel toll station.
Angered by the police action, the crowd blocked the road leading to Butere Police Station and charged at the officers with stone missiles.
Sensing danger, Savula reportedly asked the officers to jump into one of his cars and sped to Mumias West Police Station in Mumias Sub County.
When asked about Savula's case, a female officer responded, 'They have left. They are not here.'
She added that nothing had been recorded in the occurrence book as the officers were brought to the station for their safety after coming under attack.
Mumias West Police Commander Paul Lazaro confirmed the MP's presence at the station but referred journalists to his counterpart in Butere, where the incident occurred.
