At least 156 people have lost their lives in protests that erupted in Ethiopia following the murder of popular singer Haacaaluu Hundeessaa on July 29, 2020.
The protests, which began in the capital city of Addis Ababa, quickly spread to the surrounding Oromia region, with the majority of the casualties occurring there.
According to Jibril Mohammed, head of the Oromia Security and Peace Bureau, the 156 deaths reported so far are only those who died in the Oromia region, which was the worst affected by the protests.
He warned that the death toll may rise further as many of those injured are still receiving treatment in hospitals.
Of the 156 casualties, 145 are civilians, while 11 are security personnel, Mohammed added.
