July 5, 2020 - The World Health Organization has labeled COVID-19 as potentially endemic, and Kenya's coronavirus case fatality rate has indeed fallen to 2.03 percent, the lowest rate recorded since the outbreak.

According to the latest data, the country has reported 160 virus-linked deaths against 7,886 reported infections. This marks a significant drop from the peak of 5.1 percent in April, which later dropped to 3.4 percent in May and averaged 2.5 percent in June.

Health Chief Administrative Secretary Rashid Aman attributed the decline in fatality rate to the tireless efforts of healthcare workers. 'We want to appreciate our health care workers who have been working tirelessly to make this achievement possible,' he said during a status update on the pandemic.

Kenya's recovery rate stands at 29 percent, which is lower than the global rate of 57 percent. There are currently 5,439 active coronavirus patients, with 2,287 recoveries recorded so far.

During the 24-hour period leading up to Sunday, 309 new cases were reported, including a year-old child and an 83-year-old. The new patients include 217 males and 92 females, with Nairobi accounting for 193 of the new cases.
