On July 5, 2020, Lugari MP Ayub Savula was arrested by police at Mumias Police Station, sparking a series of events that led to his eventual release.
According to Savula, he was traveling from the home of Amani National Congress leader Musalia Mudavadi when he was spotted at Sabatia market by members of the public.
The crowd blocked his car and demanded that he address them, a request he complied with.
Immediately after alighting from his vehicle to address the crowd, Savula said police officers ordered him to accompany them to the Mumias Police Station, accusing him of flouting COVID-19 regulations.
After several hours at the station, police freed him without charge, allowing him to continue with his journey to Busia, where he was scheduled to attend a meeting chaired by Musalia Mudavadi and Bungoma Senator Moses Wetangula.
