As Kenya continues to grapple with the Covid-19 pandemic, traders in Murang'a County are urging the government to relocate a roadblock erected on the Chania River to ease movement between Murang'a and Thika.
According to officials from the local branch of the Kenya National Chamber of Commerce and Industry, the roadblock has severely impacted trade and commerce in the county, with hundreds of residents unable to access their business premises and places of work.
Speaking in Murang'a town, Festus Kamau Thanduru, a leading official, called for the relocation of the roadblock to Kiambu County, citing the need for smooth access to Thika town.
The officials also urged the county to consider waiving land rates, single business permits, and liquor licenses for six months to cushion traders, as well as reducing parking fees.
Residents from Gatanga and Kandara have been particularly affected by the roadblock, which was mounted at the start of the Nyeri-Nairobi highway.
