On June 11, Alvina Muthei, 3, and Henry Jacktone, 4, walked into the Athi-River police station, sparking a mystery that has left investigators searching for answers.
A businessman who runs a kiosk outside the police gate claims to have seen the children around 11 am, but never saw them leave the station. Two hours later, a man and a woman inquired about missing children and were directed towards the police station yard where the children were last spotted.
Investigations have revealed that the parents, Stephen Muthiani and Catherine Musembi, were directed towards the police parking yard by the trader, where they met a senior officer who advised them to file a report.
Two theories have emerged: the children died after suffocating inside the accident car parked at the police station yard, or they were victims of a wider scheme to cover up an accident involving rogue cops.
Recording of statements will start today, ahead of the postmortem next week, which investigators hope will yield more clues.
The owner of the crime scene car, a Toyota Belta, had gone to the Athi River police station on Tuesday to pick his detained motor vehicle when he noticed a foul smell from the boot.
Upon further inspection, he discovered the two lifeless bodies, covered in a black paper bag.
