On July 5, 2020, a study conducted by Trends and Insights For Africa (TIFA) shed light on the most effective measures in controlling the spread of coronavirus in Nairobi's low-income areas.
The study, conducted between June 2 and 15, identified physical distancing as the single most effective measure in combating the virus, with 24% of respondents mentioning its importance.
Mass testing and restriction of movement in and out of hotspot areas followed closely, with 19% and 13% of respondents citing their effectiveness, respectively.
Wearing masks, restricting mass gatherings, and using sanitizers were also identified as effective measures, with 2% of respondents mentioning their importance.
Interestingly, the study found that awareness of virus prevention measures increased when their enforcement resulted in 'drama' as reported by the media, such as violence by the police in enforcing the curfew.
The survey was conducted in Huruma, Kibera, Mathare, Korogocho, Mukuru kwa Njenga, and Kawangware in Nairobi, with 579 respondents interviewed.
