On June 19th, 2020, President Uhuru Kenyatta assured a webinar audience that he would not contravene the two-term limit set by the constitution, despite photos of his 2022 campaign merchandise surfacing online.
According to the photos, the previous slogan 'I'm finishing the journey with Uhuru Kenyatta' has been changed to 'I'm renewing the journey with Uhuru Kenyatta, 2022.'
President Kenyatta had previously refuted claims that he intended to stay in office for another term, citing the constitution's two-term limit. However, the proposed constitutional changes under the BBI include the position of an Executive Prime Minister, which President Kenyatta could potentially hold after 2022.
During the webinar, President Kenyatta stated, 'It is unfortunate that some people have misinterpreted the scenario of a referendum to change a constitution to mean that certain individuals want to change that Constitution to extend presidential term.'
He added, 'If there is one thing, Kenyans are clear about since 1992 when we introduced multiparty is the two-term limit and there is no single president who has broken that, and I do not intend to be the first.'
