As of July 5, 2020, Rwanda had registered 1,042 positive coronavirus cases and had conducted 147,904 tests, with an average of 4,000 tests per day.
The country's systematic containment measures have been effective in containing the virus spread, with timely interventions from the government.
However, the surge in cases has led to a re-evaluation of the lockdown strategy, with a Cabinet meeting on Tuesday chaired by President Paul Kagame resolving not to place the country under another lockdown.
Despite this, movement in Rusizi is still prohibited from 9pm to 5am, and the district remains under lockdown due to community transmissions.
Dr Sabin Nsanzimana, the director of Rwanda Biomedical Centre, noted that while Rubavu has staved off community transmissions, Rusizi is still facing this challenge.
The European Union Council has recommended the lifting of travel restrictions alongside 14 other countries, and Germany's Robert Koch Institute has announced that Rwanda is no longer a Covid-19 risk area.
