On July 5, 2020, detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) foiled a daring heist in Busia town, arresting five suspects, including a police officer, who attempted to withdraw Sh28.5 million from a Kenya Commercial Bank (KCB) account.
The suspects, who included a police officer, Constable Kipkirui Tanui, attached to Wilson Airport, and an alleged city businessman, Alex Kimeli, were arrested while waiting for their colleagues to withdraw the cash.
According to the DCI, the suspects had presented a withdrawal form to the KCB Busia branch manager, but it did not tally with the account holder's details. The bank tipped off the DCI officers, who then arrested the suspects.
“Arrest of three suspects followed a discrepancy noted in the transaction form presented to the branch manager that bore a different ID number,” said the DCI.
Two other suspects, Bhavin Ramesh, Vijay Jamnaday, and Desmond Lusweti, were arrested after the bank manager noted the discrepancy in their transaction form.
